Competitors’ new keywords

For this insight, we only consider keywords that your competitors newly ranked in the top 30 for over the past month but were not ranked for previously. Detecting these keywords will help you keep up with trending terms and discover new content strategy ideas. It will also prevent you from missing optimization opportunities.

In the top right corner of the insight panel, you’ll see the total number of new insights in the category. If you are missing this category in the tool’s main section, it means there were no new insights detected during the selected detection period. Try to set the detection period to "Last month" for the insight to appear. To check all detected insights, click the View All button.

How it works

All new keywords that have proved their effectiveness for your competitors over the last month are presented neatly in the table (if it is empty, ensure that the detection period is set to “Last month”). The tool provides the following information about each detected keyword for quick analysis:

  • The total number of monthly searches for a specific keyword.
  • Keyword Difficulty for a specific keyword (shows how challenging it will be to get this search query to rank in the top 10 search results).
  • The page that is ranking in search results for a specific keyword.
  • Position of the site by keyword.
  • The volume of traffic that a keyword can get based on its current ranking positions and search volume.
  • The search engine, country, and date of detection.

All this information can be exported in an Excel or CSV file by clicking on the Export button at the top right corner of the table.

If you hover over a keyword in the first column and then click the three-dotted button, you will see a context menu with additional options. First, if you find a keyword that is worth your attention, add it to your project or to a new or existing list in Keyword Manager and return to it later. Keywords added to your project will be marked as “Tracked” in the table.

You should also check current search results for that keyword by selecting the first option from the context menu. This will allow you to obtain additional information to support your future optimization activities. If you are not sure about the keyword, we recommend running a detailed analysis in Keyword Research to see its search volume, difficulty, search intent, and more.

To get a list of suggestions explaining the actions you need to take to keep up with your competitors, click the “Recommendations” button located in the right-hand corner above the table. These suggestions can be used as your original “to-do” list or as additions to your current optimization strategies.
