SE Ranking basics

Everything you need for a smooth launch with SE Ranking

How to create a project

Projects in SE Ranking are dedicated workspaces for tracking one website and its SEO data, including keyword rankings, competitors, audit results, and more. Each project is tied to a specific domain or URL.

This article will guide you through creating your first project in SE Ranking, step by step.

Project creation process

In the side menu, click Projects to open the All Projects page. Click Create Project to get started. Alternatively, use the search field and select the same option.

Go through the following steps:

1. Enter general project information

Start by entering your website's URL and giving your project a name to distinguish it from other projects on the platform.

You can choose whether to analyze the entire domain or only specific parts of your website.

You can also configure project access and reporting settings, including grouping, reporting, and project status.

When you're done, click Next Step to continue.

2. Add search engines

Next, select the search engines you want to use to track your website's rankings and brand visibility.

You can choose from traditional and AI search engines:

  • Google (desktop or mobile)
  • Bing
  • Yahoo
  • AI Overviews
  • AI Mode
  • ChatGPT
  • Gemini
  • Perplexity

For most search engines, you can select the country, preferred audience language, and precise location for more accurate tracking. For AI search engines, you can also enter your brand name (the exact name associated with your project).

You can add multiple locations to the same project and track a different set of keywords for each location. This is useful when targeting different countries, cities, or audiences.

For example, you can track English keywords in the United States and Italian keywords in Italy within the same project.

You can also:

  • Track mobile rankings: Add Google Mobile alongside Google Desktop to monitor rankings across both device types.
  • Track multiple languages in one location: Add separate search engine configurations for different languages within the same location. For example, you can track English, French, and German rankings in Switzerland.
  • Use different keyword sets: Assign relevant keywords to each location and language configuration.

When you've added all the search engines and configurations you need, click Next Step.

3. Add keywords

If you haven't added any traditional search engines in the previous step, the project wizard will skip this step.

Otherwise, add the keywords you want to track in your selected search engines.

You can:

  • Enter or paste keywords manually.
  • Import keywords from a file.
  • Enable keyword suggestions to find relevant terms.

If you've configured multiple locations or languages, you can add different keyword sets for each configuration.

For example, you can track English keywords for Google USA and Italian keywords for Google Italy.

4. Add prompts for AI search tracking

If you haven't added any AI search engines in Step 2, the project wizard will skip this step.

Otherwise, add the prompts you want to track. Prompts are questions users ask AI search engines.

You can enter prompts manually, import them from a CSV file, or use the tool's suggestions.

Note: Keep your prompt limits in mind. When tracking the same prompt across multiple AI search engines, usage is calculated as follows:

Number of prompts × Number of AI search engines

Your current prompt limit is displayed on the page.

For example:

2 prompts × 3 AI search engines = 6 prompt tracking units

5. Add competitors

Add up to 20 competitors to compare your website's rankings with theirs.

You can add an entire website, a specific URL, or a website section.

When you're done, click Add competitors to project to save them, then click Next Step to continue.

6. Connect analytics services

In the final step, you can connect additional analytics services to your project:

  • Google Analytics
  • Google Search Console
  • Matomo Analytics

These integrations allow you to access additional website performance data within SE Ranking.

For detailed setup instructions, refer to the corresponding integration articles.

When everything is ready, click Finish.
