Why is search volume showing 0 (or looks different from what I expected)?
Search volume can display as 0 or differ from other sources for several expected reasons rather than being a bug:
- Data source and update cadence. Volumes are based on Google Keyword Planner data, which is grouped into ranges and refreshed periodically, so figures may lag behind real-time trends and differ from other tools.
- Country and region selection. Volume is tied to the country and local region you choose. A keyword with demand in one market can show 0 in another, so make sure the selected location matches the audience you are analyzing.
- Topics restricted by Google. Google may not return search volumes for certain restricted or sensitive topics—such as gambling, adult content, healthcare, weapons, and others. This can also affect non-obvious keywords, so a term that clearly should have demand may still show 0. Google does not publish an official, definitive list of the specific keywords it restricts.
- Low-volume, new, or seasonal keywords. Long-tail, very specific, brand-new, or out-of-season queries often have too little measurable demand to report and are shown as 0.
- Spelling, spacing, or language. Misspellings, extra spaces, or mixed-language queries can return 0—check the exact query and the selected language or region.
If a keyword clearly has demand but consistently shows 0 for the correct region after re-running the check, contact support so we can investigate.
Why does search volume differ between SE Ranking tools and Google Keyword Planner?
Seeing different search volumes for the same keyword in different SE Ranking tools or in Google Keyword Planner is expected behavior, not a bug.
-
Keyword Research and Rank Tracker vs. Google Keyword Planner. Google Keyword Planner often groups similar keywords together and reports a single search volume for the whole group rather than for each individual keyword. As a result, raw Keyword Planner values may not reflect the actual demand for one specific keyword.
In Keyword Research and Rank Tracker, SE Ranking applies its own algorithm and coefficients on top of the raw data to ungroup similar keywords and provide a more precise search volume estimate for each individual query. Because SE Ranking and Google Keyword Planner use different calculations, their search volumes for the same keyword can legitimately differ. - Keyword Research vs. a Project (Rank Tracker). A project can display search volume that was collected earlier, so it may lag behind the latest figures shown in Keyword Research. If a project shows outdated numbers, use the refresh search volume button in the project to pull updated data.
- Search Volume Checker vs. Keyword Research. The Search Volume Checker returns raw Google Keyword Planner data, while the Keyword Research tool applies SE Ranking’s own algorithm and coefficients on top of that data. Because the two tools use different calculations, their search volumes for the same keyword can legitimately differ.
If the numbers still look inconsistent after refreshing the project and confirming that the same country and region are selected, contact support so we can investigate.
