We regularly monitor how Google search results change over time, and we'd like to share what we typically see. This may help explain why a position in SE Ranking can differ from what you see in a manual check, even when the settings are identical.
Within the same day
Google results are not static, even over a few minutes:
- The top 3 and top 10 are usually very stable. Changes there are rare and often reverse within minutes.
- Positions 11–30 typically shift by no more than 1 position.
- Most movement happens at positions 30–100. Between two checks just minutes apart, around 5–12 of the 100 results can be replaced. Positions there commonly shift by 3–5, and individual pages can move 10+ positions and then return.
Between days
Changes from one day to the next are larger than within a day:
- The top 10 generally stays the same.
- In the top 100, around 10 results are usually replaced overnight, and the average shift roughly doubles compared to intraday checks, with the biggest changes at positions 30–60.
How results change
- Cascade effect: when one result enters or leaves the list, every result below it moves by one position. Many 1-position changes are caused by this, not by a real change in ranking.
- Page swaps within a domain: Google may start ranking a different page of the same site. It can look like a page "dropped," while the domain keeps its position.
- Short-term fluctuations: some results appear or disappear for a short time and then return.
What this means for you
- A difference of 1–2 positions in the top 10, or several positions further down, is usually normal search engine behavior rather than a data error.
- To check a specific keyword, open the saved copy of the search results in your Rankings report. If your site appears there at the reported position, the difference comes from normal movement in Google's results.
- If you see a large difference in the top 10, please check that the location (city, not only country), device, and language match your project settings, and that you are searching in a logged-out or incognito window.
- For trend analysis, we recommend looking at position history over several days rather than comparing single checks.
If keywords are showing as "not found" or missing positions, see Google rankings: delays and missing positions for the latest on that issue.
If a difference still looks unusual, please contact our support team and include the keyword, location, device, and a screenshot of your check. We'll be happy to look into it.
